What Is the Rice Purity Test?
At its core, the Rice Purity Test is a 100-question checklist that converts your life experience into a single number. Zero means you've checked basically everything on the list. One hundred means you've checked nothing. Most people land somewhere in the middle and then immediately text their best friend to compare.
The original was nothing like the test you know today. In 1924, the Rice Thresher — Rice University's student paper — published a ten-question survey of female undergraduates under the cheerfully unserious headline "Rice Girls Not Quite Half Bad." That tiny survey is the seed of everything that followed. The hundred-question version most of us have actually taken didn't settle into its modern shape until the 1980s, when it became part of freshman orientation at Rice and started quietly migrating to other campuses on photocopied handouts.
The questions move through five rough areas: relationships and romance, physical intimacy, substances, run-ins with rules or the law, and the broader bucket of social behavior. They start almost embarrassingly mild — held hands, been on a date — and drift into significantly weirder territory by the back half. You check what applies, skip what doesn't, and there's no correct answer to aim for. It's a snapshot, not a scorecard.
How Does the Score Work?
The math is refreshingly simple — you begin at 100, and every box you check knocks one point off. Whatever number you're left with at the end is your score. That's the entire system.
Read Question Carefully
Read each of the 100 questions honestly and carefully.
Check the Boxes
Check every box that genuinely applies to your experience.
Get Instant Score
Your final score equals 100 minus the number of boxes you checked.
So if you check 35 boxes, you land at 65. Check 12, you're at 88. There's no weighting, no hidden multiplier — what you see is what you get.
What Does Your Score Mean?
A rough guide to where each score range tends to sit. If you want the full breakdown with all the nuance, our complete score guide goes much deeper.
| Score | Label | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | Very Innocent | Very few or no romantic, social, or substance experiences. |
| 70–89 | Fairly Pure | Some typical teenage or early adult experiences — dating, kissing, maybe trying alcohol. |
| 50–69 | Moderately Experienced | A normal range for college-aged adults with a moderate spread of experiences. |
| 30–49 | Experienced | A wide range of adult experiences across multiple categories. |
| Below 30 | Very Experienced | Extensive life experiences across nearly all categories. Rare. |
Worth saying again — your number isn't a verdict. It's just the shape of your life so far, and lives have a habit of looking very different five years from now.
